THE FIRST LIBRARIAN OF PARLIAMENT, Alpheus Todd, advised that
this Gothic marvel be separated from the Centre Block by a
corridor to protect it from fire. That advice helped save the
Library from the disastrous fire that struck the Centre Block in
1916. The inferno destroyed the rest of the Centre Block except
for the northwest wing.
Lasting impressions
Today, plans are being developed to renovate the Library of
Parliament. While the building is being renovated, which is
expected to take three years, the Library will be relocated to a
suitable temporary site. Restoration architects will ensure that
heritage guidelines are followed when preserving this historic
national landmark for the information needs of future Parliaments
and the enjoyment of future generations of visitors. And, while
we seldom consider the importance of things we don't see, like
electrical wiring or plumbing, these systems too must be
upgraded.
From books to computers
Hushed halls and alcoves and the rustling of papers still greet
visitors to the Library of Parliament, belying the dramatic
changes libraries have undergone since the introduction of new
information technologies. Computers are essential in our
information-driven age, as are facsimile machines, photocopiers and
audio-visual equipment. The Library's existing electrical and
ventilation systems must be upgraded to support increased
equipment demands both now and in the future.
Cherry, oak and walnut
The variety of textures, colours and hand-crafted detail inside
the Library are typical of Gothic architecture. The intricate
parquet floor, richly designed of cherry, oak and walnut wood has
been sanded and refinished so many times that it must be
replaced.
The end result: a new beginning
The renovations will preserve the heritage of this magnificent
building while modernizing those invisible yet essential systems
we take for granted. To top it all off, the copper roof will be
repaired, and the Library of Parliament will be back in business,
better than ever.
