Introduction

After reading this module, you will be a little more familiar with Canada's linguistic geography. You will learn that English and French are the two languages most widely spoken but also that other languages are used, in varying degrees, depending on the area of Canada you are in.

Even though our maps are covered with colours, the majority of the Canadian population lives in the southern part of the country. We use data from Statistics Canada and census divisions as our method of displaying data. As the Census Divisions cover all of Canada, we cannot isolate the regions which are densely populated from those that are not. Therefore, in order to help you better understand the nature of Canada's linguistic geography, we have added a map of population density and a map of the ecumene. (The ecumene is the inhabited area of Canada). These two maps will help locate where the Canadian population really lives...
