Anglophones

While looking at the map, you may notice that anglophones are concentrated in the West, Ontario and most of Atlantic Canada. You should conclude that the presence of either francophones or allophones explains the decrease in colour intensity for Quebec and for most northern areas elsewhere in Canada.

The 1991 Census reveals that 22.5 million Canadians (83% of the total population) can speak English. Of this group, 16.3 million indicated that English was their mother tongue. Over the past 40 years, the overall percentage of anglophones has remained stable. However, in Quebec and in areas with high immigration (areas where newcomers don't speak English or French) the proportion of anglophones has decreased during this period.
